Fourth year included the selection of two topical studios. We were asked to choose from a list of 4 specific studios the one which best represented our interests in design.
The first semester studio was a digital methods course. We were asked to design a research institute which heavily utilized a digital addition of our design. My design was inspired by the research methods of academia, and I used digital screens to relay information from colleague to colleague via work station and screens throughout the facility. The site was Boston Harbor adjacent to the Institute of Contemporary Art.
The second semester studio was a very loosely regulated design course, where the students were asked to address a problem in New York City. I chose the site of Columbus Circle, where pedestrians and cars are constantly trying to inhabit the same space, often with disastrous results. I tried to reconcile this problem by moving the pedestrians below and above grade to get them out of the line of traffic on the streets.
